Taylor Swift has responded on Twitter to the comments made about her in the Netflix original show, Ginny and Georgia.
The show was recorded in Toronto, Canada and features the story of Ginny and her family. Her family has been on the run for years, and they finally decide to stop running, to make a life for themselves in New England. However, Taylor Swift has called out the show for seemingly being ‘deeply sexist.’ The dialogue in the final episode of the first series featured Ginny and Georgia fighting about their relationships:
“What do you care? You go through men faster than Taylor Swift.”
Swift has responded by reminding fans of the show, and Netflix themselves that it is Women’s History Month, with International Women’s Day being held on March 8th.
“Hey Ginny & Georgia, 2010 called and it wants its lazy, deeply sexist joke back. How about we stop degrading hard-working women by defining this horse shit as FuNnY. Happy Women’s History Month, I guess.”
Swift has regularly been featured in news stories because of her love life. Throughout her career, her music and lyrics have been regularly scrutinised, with members of the public trying to identify the people she has written about. Publications like The Sun have shared articles about Swift ‘certainly having a type’ and analysing her previous relationships. Although the website has similarly published articles on her male counterparts, the articles are still deemed to be sexist and offensive.
In response to the post, many of Swift’s fans have praised the artist for speaking out, rather than ignoring the remark on the show. Some have compared the positive statements made about the artist on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, suggesting that Netflix’ writers need some new inspiration. Although, some long term fans suggested that the line was just a bad joke, and that ‘comedy is going to be dead in ten years.’
The majority of her followers are supporting the decision for her to speak out, particularly because International Women’s Day is being celebrated next week. The ‘Taylor sings about all of her exes’ trope is getting old, and nobody seems to find it funny anymore.
