Charli XCX, 1975 and No Rome launch supergroup with debut single ‘Spinning’

Charli XCX has just released ‘Spinning,’ a dance-pop track with her new supergroup. The band is formed of No Rome and The 1975. All three alt-pop artists have come together to make an upbeat, summery tune; just in time for the season change.

The trio has been talking about the collaboration for months. Charli formally announced on the 28th of February via Twitter that she was forming a supergroup with Dirty Hit acts No Rome and The 1975.

Charli and The 1975 recorded vocals in January 2020 at Laneway Festival in New Zealand, but the collaboration speculation goes back to 2019. This was when Matty Healy tweeted saying that he sent a beat to Charli. In an interview with NME after her Reading Festival set in 2016, she mentioned that ideas were going back and forth, hoping a collaboration with The 1975 could take place.

“I don’t know what’s going on. But I really admire their song writing, so hopefully, something will come of it.”

Now the wait is finally over.

Charli quote tweeted No Rome’s tweet last month with a tornado emoji over a text message, teasing the new music. At the time, I thought nothing of it, only to realise it was a massive giveaway of the song title: ‘Spinning.’

Guendoline Rome Viray Gomez, also known as No Rome, is an R&B/Pop artist from the Philippines, now based in London. He signed to Dirty Hit in 2017 and since then, he has collaborated with members of The 1975 on several tracks.

‘Spinning’ is definitely a dance track, which George and Matty of The 1975 produced and mixed. They wrote the track with No Rome, featuring Charlie and Rome on vocals.

If The 1975’s festival at Finsbury Park was going ahead this summer (which has now been cancelled), there would have been a great opportunity to perform the house track. Both Charli XCX and The 1975 are on the lineup, with No Rome likely being a brilliant guest performance.

Let’s hope that Reading and Leeds can take place this year, and Charli is playing…
