The 18-year-old voice of Luxembourg – C’est Karma (real name Karma Catena) has blessed us with a new single. Pool Party was released on October 7th, from her upcoming EP Farbfilm. Catena is beginning to showcase a new theme in her music, an illustration of personal evolution.
Despite sounding soft, quiet, and innocent, C’est Karma’s artistic side is loud. Pool Party is an expression of feminism, with lyrics discussing women receiving unwanted stares from men at the beach. This track is likely relatable to any woman who has ever felt self-conscious and objectified.
‘I feel like prey when I can feel an unknown man’s eyes scan my body. And that is what this song is about, it’s about men we don’t know that have the power to make us feel uneasy.’
Her original acoustic folk sound has developed, with her newer music sounding much richer. The inclusion of bass and drums provides a more well-rounded sound, making the track even more enjoyable to listen to.
Catena has admitted how she hated mainstream music when she was going through her teenage years, but now seems to fall into the genre of pop herself. On her blog, she said:
‘I see everything that happened to my music in direct link with my personal evolution, as I started with acoustic folk stuff and have now turned to more experimental pop music.’
She never thought her values could be represented through a mainstream sound. Her biggest inspirations – Charli XCX, SOPHIE and Björk have proven her wrong. Politics, social issues, and climate change have always been topics that have influenced her art and music. An example would be Girls, a track that was written to support International Women’s Day and the LGBTQ+ community.
Despite only picking up a guitar at the age of 15, C’est Karma has toured with well-known Latvian band Carnival Youth in Germany, and opened for Milky Chance for her third ever show. Her music would definitely be an enjoyable listen for any AURORA, CocoRosie, Daughter, and Sóley fans.
