Back to challenge the music industry, Tommy Cash has released his new EP, titled ‘MONEYSUTRA‘.
Earlier this year, Cash released his single ‘Mute‘, which featured three and a half minutes of pure silence. Despite its strange nature, it still hit the global charts. Adidas Originals also released their ‘longest shoe in the world’ in collaboration with Cash. Now, the Estonian artist has returned with ‘MONEYSUTRA’, an EP that features a diverse list of collaborations. The EP includes tracks with BONES, Riff Raff, $uicideBoy$, Diplo and Russian rapper Eldzhey. It might seem like Cash is often trolling the music industry, but he always seems to make a point with his surreal ideas.
Despite stating in an old interview that he didn’t like $uicideBoy$, the EP opens with a track featuring $uicideBoy$ and Diplo. ‘Zuccenberg‘ is very trap and divided in terms of the lyrics, and it might be hard to understand anything until Ruby’s verse kicks in towards the end. This song uses the jingle from the Russian cartoon Nu, Pogodi! as the bridge of the track, an interesting way of bringing the verses together. This is a unique piece of art, like everything else that Tommy lays his hands on.
‘Siri‘ features a collaboration with BONES, which might come as an unexpected collaboration, but this is why we love Tommy. His career moves are unpredictable, meaning that all new works are exciting for his audience. His fans seem to be hyped about the new underground trap hop-hop sound that Tommy is creating, proving that artists shouldn’t feel restrained by their musical genres. Although we are used to hearing Cash’s Soviet side, he is clearly broadening his horizons, working with a variety of international artists.
‘Racked‘, the only solo track on the EP, reminds us of the original Tommy Cash we have grown to love. You can feel his roots and influences, with a signature lyrical style that he has perfected over the years. He manages to deliver the song with very primitive beats and instrumentals, and a random guitar solo at the end, bringing a more modern and fresh feeling to the song. ‘Millionaire Mullet’ sounds like something completely out of Cash’s musical comfort zone, but does he even have one? Cash turns the tables later on, with his own soft verse, the most emotional and nostalgic track on the EP. The reference to money in the EP title comes from the final track, ‘Nalik‘, which literally means ‘money’ in Russian. Both Eldzhey and Cash play around on this track, mixing both English and Russian lyrics. This combination feels very innovative, and both of their voices blend together extremely well.
This EP is a brilliant representation of Tommy Cash, a figure who doesn’t want to follow any industry standards. He wants to challenge these limits, and have a laugh at the absurd creations he tends to create.
