The Snuts have just released their debut album ‘W.L.‘, firmly establishing guitar music’s place in 2021.
This Scottish band has long been an example of how artists break past the status quo, unafraid of branching out of the UK’s conventional indie sound. Wanting to connect with their fans on their deeper level, the band has created a well-rounded and coherent track list, grabbing the hearts of the nation. There is no song on this album that overshadows or dominates another, showing that this record has clearly been years in the making.
This guitar-heavy and genre-hopping release starts out with ‘Top Deck‘, a tame and raw song that sets the mood for the rest of the album. The calm acoustic guitar accompanied by the hauntingly beautiful cello complements the raw and emotional vocals from Jack Cochrane (lead singer). This rather serene tune shows off the impressive musical range of the band.
Next, with ‘Always‘, The Snuts liven up the mood through their upbeat electric guitar and dramatic drums. The pre-chorus perfectly builds up to the electric chorus and truly makes this a heartfelt anthem. Likewise, ‘Juan Belmonte‘ takes their guitar melodies to another level. The addicting guitar riffs and bright vocals create a euphoric and ecstatic atmosphere, perfectly illustrating how guitar music has a place in 2021. ‘All Your Friends‘ is a festival-ready tune, mirroring elements of songs by The Black Keys. The simple bass and guitar melodies during the verses contrast the uplifting and loud chorus, ready for a lively crowd.
The mid-section of the album takes you to a warm and sunny day, ideal for the summer ahead. ‘Somebody Loves You‘ and ‘Maybe California‘ are undeniable pop tunes, with dynamic choruses and contagious melodies. ‘No Place I’d Rather Go‘ and ‘Boardwalk‘ are definitely songs to be played at the beach or at a chill get-together with friends, with the calm yet bright and positive guitar melodies taking you to a place of pure bliss. The Snuts remind their fans that they don’t care what anyone thinks about them in ‘Don’t Forget It (Punk)‘. This heavy rock song reveals how The Snuts don’t take their music too seriously and just want to do what they want, when they want to. Through this song, they explain that their fans should not take them too seriously either.
‘W.L.’ draws to a close with spirited pop-rock tunes ‘Coffee & Cigarettes‘ and ‘Elephants‘. Previously released as singles in 2020, these tracks have already received positive responses and are a good insight into what The Snuts are capable of producing. A more traditional indie sound can be found in these songs, and leave the listener with a memorable outlook of the band. ‘Sing For Your Supper‘ is the last song on the album and lasts for six minutes, presenting a euphoric ending and shows off the band’s undeniable guitar talents.
The Snuts are clearly ready to take their music back to the stage and have certainly excited their fans for the summer to come. With this album, they demonstrate how bands can successfully have fun with their music and not be constrained by sticking to one genre or theme. This also means that ‘W.L.’ can be enjoyed by anyone, due to the diverse nature of the track list. The songs range from relaxing and uninterrupted tunes, to energetic and rock anthems, so no matter who you are, The Snuts have a track for you.
