Elessar have released a new single, titled ‘Vices’. It’s a foot-stomping anthem of a track, combining heavy riffs, punchy lyrics and synths.
The single begins deceptively, with a gentle, string-like soar that seems more likely to herald angels than a three-piece pop-rock band from Gloucestershire. But then the low, distorted vocals of frontman Ricky Powell crash their way through the door with an almost menacing “I just can’t get enough”. As his voice is joined by almost deafening guitars and a frantic, pounding beat, we know that this is going to be a lot more fun than hanging out with the heavenly host.
As the song progresses, the band – also comprised of guitarist Alex Evans and drummer Dan James – makes further use of their contrasting pop and rock sensibilities. In the build-up to the choruses, we have more dreamy synths and almost robotic voices. Then, the same lyrics that opened the track become the bridge that connects the two elements, leading us into the heavier guitar-lead choruses.
There’s also good variation in the verses. The first verse feels very pop-punk in style, and introduces us to a toxic on-off relationship with a married woman: “Put the ring back on your finger / Because girl I don’t want to know it”. The second verse, however, ups the pace and is almost (although not quite) more in the style of rap or spoken word. The confident and stompy energy of the track remains until the last second.
Those who want to experience that energy in person will be pleased to know that the band are eager to play shows again as soon as possible, according to their management. Fans should also get ready for more new music, as they reportedly have several singles in the pipeline.
