It’s the annual purge, so put your mosh pit shoes on and get ready to riot to ‘DAYWALKER!’ by Machine Gun Kelly, featuring CORPSE.
The underground horror/trap-core rap scene has been blowing up in its recent months, mostly because of artists like $uicideboy$, BONES, Ghostemane and CORPSE. This collaboration was already teased back in December of 2020 when Corpse was live streaming Among Us on his YouTube channel. They only announced the exact release date and artwork on March 9th, intending on causing chaos, proving that anything is possible when making music in your room without a record label. With not even 24 hours passing, the track was already the #1 single on iTunes Alternative Chart.
This is a very unique collaboration, depending on both artists’ vocal abilities and styles, but they still manage to complement and contrast each other. MGK owns his rapping abilities while Corpse passionately screams his lungs out. After hearing this, no wonder he was complaining about his throat hurting after the recording sessions on his stream. The track is born to be on a fighting scene in a movie or executed in live performances to create mosh pits. It sounds like an avant-garde, rebel-like riot anthem with a horror-ish high-pitched melody running under a heavy bass. It might get a bit repetitive after a while, but at the same time, it’s has a signature sound, making the track immediately recognisable.
There’s a signature, almost ASMR sounding section, which could have been executed a bit better production-wise as it serves as one of the most attractive parts of the song. “I wanna know if I tell you a secret, will you keep it?” is the most intimate line, where both MGK and Corpse whisper in your ear. However, the melody goes down, almost like you turned the volume down on your phone to protect your hearing.
Similarly to the sound, the lyricism of the track is very aggressive. It creates a bloody scene full of adrenaline and rage. Fans are interpreting this song as an embodiment of a panic attack and intrusive thoughts, or anxious adrenaline. This would make sense, as both artists are struggling with mental illness in their daily lives.
“There’s an invisible voice that is talkin’ to me and it’s always tellin’ me to kill / I got a problem with separating what my head is creating from things that are real”
This is what the quiet kids listen to and what causes an outrage of triggered mothers in the comments section. Pumped Up Kicks seems innocent as hell after listening to this one.
