imojen releases new single ‘Angus’

imojen’s latest single ‘Angus’ is an honest and haunting exploration of the inherited and internalised misogyny that can flow between fathers and their sons. The track details the path of inherited trauma, from father to son, before finally impacting their romantic relationships in life.

“Beg for my forgiveness / You raised a rotten boy / Don’t write to me / Don’t suggest”

imojen explores how the titular ‘Angus’ “raised a rotten boy,” through rich and deep guitar riffs, overlaid with lilting folk vocals. The song weaves a vivid soundscape, juxtaposing the imagery of country clubs versus wildfires and graveyards.

The contrast between the controlled imagery of the country club, one of the most prominent symbols of the patriarchy and classist hierarchies within society, and the natural and ethereal imagery associated with imojen, highlights a deep disconnect between the lived experience of these damaged and “rotten boy[s]” and their partners.

imojen’s work is saturated with full and vibrant backing vocals, creating complex harmonies that draw the listener into a mystical and timeless reality. This track allows for a simultaneous exploration of vengeance and escapism.

“I’ll wait until dark to dance on your grave”

‘Angus’ is Brighton based singer-songwriter imojen’s second single release, following on from her single ‘Raptures,’ released in May of 2020. It is a similarly fantastical and personal exploration of relationships, the body and identity. imojen grapples with the realities of a queer, femme existence through her rich harmonies and polished lyrics that permeate her work.

imojen is planning on releasing further singles before embarking on recording an EP. If the quality of instrumental melody and lyricism is already present in her first releases, I am sure that we can expect great things from this rising force.
