BigFatBig Release New Single ‘Milk and Vinegar’

It has become clear that there are not enough girl bands coming out of the North East, but Geordie newcomers BigFatBig are smashing their way onto the Newcastle scene. Their new single Milk and Vinegar is an unstoppable anthem of self-expression, shouting loud and proud about the band’s strongest friendships.

Crowned as one of BBC Music Introducing’s ‘North East’s Tips for 2020,’ BigFatBig gained praise and support from the minute they set off. Initial single releases Science and So Bored gained support from Radio 6, as well as Radio 1’s Big Weekend. Vocals are performed by PICNIC’s Robyn Walker, executing a heavier and junkier style of singing, rather than her regular funk-pop stylings. The track’s warm guitar lines and declarative lyrics are reminiscent of rebellious teenage movie soundtracks, certainly montage-worthy.

‘Katie and I wrote Milk and Vinegar at a time in our live when we felt like we’d finally found ‘our people,’ after struggling to forge friendships in the past.’ – Robyn Walker, lead vocals

Despite the cliche, Milk and Vinegar brings a modern-day sense of girl power to the North East scene, with the chorus being both harmonic and punchy. The lyrics depict anecdotes of growing older, through iconic lyrics ‘the progression of our self-expression’ and ‘Dark Fruits disguised as Fruit Shoots.’ The references illustrate a level of humour and insouciance in the band’s songwriting, something lacking in our regular listening. Their air of nonchalance appears to stem from a love of music, and confidence in themselves as artists, something we would love to see more of from upcoming bands.
