Oregon based trio Novacane are back and better than ever, with their first offering of the year: ‘Bad Breath’. After a short hiatus, the psych-pop band have returned with an indie inspired anthem that is easy, breezy and perfect for the upcoming warmer months.
Uniting the retro with the contemporary, Novacane’s sound is wonderfully eclectic, providing twangy strings, foot-tapping riffs and folk-infused vocals. Members Dylan, Oliver and Zach began forging their niche in high school at the age of 15, and have since been documenting their highs and lows through life. This is something that has moulded their sound into something that sounds really authentic. With an overarching buoyant and beachy feel, the accompanying music video is perfect for its vibe, making us ever more impatient for summer.
Placing focus on the outstanding instrumentals and production, as well as Dylan’s distinguished vocal tone, ‘Bad Breath’ nods to Novacane’s trademark 80’s style. It also features a modern indie boy-band edge that really keeps you hooked.
The outfit’s obvious musical chemistry shines through sonically and is simultaneously reflected in the single’s cheerful visuals, allowing us an insight into their jovial approach to their craft. Despite the melody having a light-hearted feel, its wacky and cynical lyricism builds a comical storyline, forging a clever paradox that really works.
“‘Cause I’m not excited I’m just smilin’”
After a solid year away from the music scene, ‘Bad Breath’ is arguably Novcane’s best work yet, so keep your eyes peeled for their future releases – I think we’ll be in for a treat.
