Brace yourselves, as GENN have released an EP fit to soundtrack the new season of Riverdale, titled ‘Liminal‘.
After releasing their debut album Titty Monster in 2018, the band have turned a new page, with an open mind to anything new that comes their way. Experimenting with genres like grunge, psychedelic and punk, GENN are thriving. They have a fresh innovation in their music, constantly coming up with new sound combinations and ideas. The Brighton-based, multi-national line-up is made up of Leona Farrugia (vocals), Janelle Borg (guitar), Leanne Zammit (bass) and Sofia Rosa Cooper (drums). GENN are a strong scream for female supremacy and hold a special level of talent that any performer would envy.
‘Feel’ opens with a strong bass line and eerie soul-penetrating vocals. GENN have mastered the sound of psychedelia, telling a story about someone’s relationship with drugs, creating their own world of chaos. Every piece of sound falls smoothly together, shifting into ‘Mackerel’s Funky Mission‘. This track is certainly the grunge escapist anthem of the EP. Delivering deeply-felt screams and screeching, Farrugia shares the tale of someone inhibiting the soul of a fish, freeing their mind from the troubles of the COVID-19 pandemic.

‘23rd March’ and ‘Catalyst’ continue the band’s more heavy punk sound. ‘Catalyst’ uses sample recordings of people chanting “Revolution”, addressing the political events of 2020. This particular track appears to represent the band’s avant-garde approach to songwriting, keeping things modern and relevant. Farrugia goes all-in with her vocals, channelling the likes of Janis Joplin until the end, with ‘Falling Out‘ ending on a higher note. I would encourage GENN to not be afraid in experimenting with their sound, even if it shocks people. Some of the tracks have a few repetitive themes and elements, which makes it harder to navigate as a whole EP. However, the guitar solos are so spectacular and beautiful, taking the band’s professionalism to the next level. These instrumentals bring power and energy to the EP, something that will translate brilliantly on stage.
GENN have just been confirmed for The Great Escape 2021, Brighton’s inner-city festival which is being held digitally this year. The band gained experience performing across the UK and Europe, supporting bands like Hands Off Gretel, PINS and Acid Mothers Temple. GENN are certainly on the right path to success, conquering the hearts of alternative music lovers everywhere.
