YONAKA have just released ‘Ordinary,’ the second single from their upcoming project. The track follows ‘Seize The Power,’ which was released in January after the band signed with independent distribution company Believe.
In recent years, YONAKA has supported Bring Me The Horizon on their European tour, and have made appearances at festivals such as Reading & Leeds, 2000 Trees and Download. After releasing their debut album Don’t Wait ‘Til Tomorrow, they embarked on a headline tour ending at London’s Electric Brixton. A year of being unable to play live shows has given the band freedom to focus on songwriting, with ‘Ordinary’ being self-produced in the comfort of their home studio in Brighton. Far from ordinary as the title suggests, their latest release defies genre boundaries, with a formidable blend of rock and pop.
There is a stark contrast between ‘Seize The Power’ and ‘Ordinary,’ with the former incorporating electronic elements and spoken word which create a more experimental sound for the band. ‘Ordinary’ reverts back to the distinguishing rock sound YONAKA are known for, with the addition of the opening piano which wouldn’t be out of place on a Bond film soundtrack. Where the two tracks converge is the lyrical theme, which is all about regaining power, living unapologetically and taking control of your life.
When discussing the track on social media, the band said “This song is for anyone who needs the push to jump for what they really want, for anyone who got comfortable serving someone else. Don’t let your life pass you by. Be honest with yourself and ask is this what you really want?”
Following the release of ‘Ordinary’, YONAKA had their first billboard displayed at London’s Euston Station, and were added to Spotify’s New Music Friday playlists in several territories around the world, including France, Columbia & Japan. If the first two releases are anything to go by, fans can expect a multifaceted second album from YONAKA. They’ll be playing a live-streamed show for Scruff of the Neck in partnership with Twitch on 19th April, featuring some of their new material, as well as supporting Catfish & The Bottlemen at their rescheduled show in September.
