Wolf Alice are back, with their new single ‘The Last Man on Earth.’
Wolf Alice are an alternative rock band, consisting of some of our favourite people in the music scene: Ellie Rowsell, Theo Ellis, Joel Amey and Joff Oddie. The band are finally back, having not released any must since their second album Visions of a Life. This LP was released in 2017, featuring the iconic tracks ‘Yuk Foo’ and ‘Don’t Delete the Kisses.’
They present us with their newest single, titled ‘The Last Man on Earth,’ and the announcement of their thirds studio album. The album in question is titled Blue Weekend and will be released in June of 2021.
‘The Last Man on Earth’ is a haunting piano ballad, turning into something explosive halfway through the track. There is a beautifully slow atmosphere to this song, which perfectly showcases Rowsell’s incredible vocals. The lyrics and vocals perfectly intertwine, delivering a dramatic twist.
As the track begins to progress, we start to hear Amey’s soft drumming, and Ellis’ psychedelic grooves, bringing the track to a lovely stop. Rowsell’s whispering of lyrics brings a whole other atmosphere to the song, which is already filled with tension, adding an extra level and seriousness to the things she is portraying.
In a discussion about the track, Rowsell wrote that the song is about the “arrogance of humans,” and other meaningless human things. Looking back at their first album My Love is Cool, which featured tracks like ‘You’re a Germ,’ Rowsell’s songwriting has definitely continued to grow. The band have an insatiable ability to portray a story, and ‘The Last Man on Earth’ brings a whole new tone to the band.
‘The Last Man on Earth’ opens a new door of aesthetic journey for Wolf Alice, something we are looking forward to following.
