Thom Southern burst through the grey boredom of lockdown with his debut track ‘Shivers,’ giving us a taste of his take on alternative pop-rock. He also gave us an insight into his craft with his ‘THOM SOUTHERN – ‘THE MAKING OF’ SHIVERS’ video. We see him showcase his musical abilities, immerse himself into the music-making process and present himself as an artist who has a hand in every part of music production.

The music video for ‘Soul Singer’ reflects the lyrical content, as the visuals explore those carefree, youthful moments. It is reminiscent of the friendships forged that stay with you long into adulthood.

The track opens with a vibrant piano melody giving the listener some much-needed summer vibes as he recounts a past summer of musical discovery: “My heart was young and bit by a soul singer.” Thom also gives us an insight and introduction into his own love of music and where the musical journey we are embarking on with him started.

Throughout the track, Southern describes forever friendships forged in youth and the loyalty that preserves from those relationships: “Wherever you go, I will go there too.” The theme of solidarity runs throughout the song and the memory of past summers adds to the anthemic and nostalgic feeling of the track.

The song also explores the difficulties of growing up and navigating youth. The melody of the track lifts as the lyrics, describing friendship taking away the difficulties of youth: “You’ve taken my problems away.”

The different styles of alternative pop-rock produced by Thom Southern that range from wistful to reflective are certainly going to make him popular at upcoming summertime gigs. Here at Safe and Sound, we are excited to see what Thom’s musical versatility will give us next.
