Welsh indie-rock band The Rotanas have released their second haywire single of 2021, aptly named ‘Manic‘.
The five-piece band hail from Cardiff, and have created something ultimately new and exciting. Their material is a toss-up between Britpop and rock, a genre they have defined as ‘Gritpop’. ‘Manic’ shares all of the elements of this newly coined genre, with unique, catchy hooks, thundering drums, and a self-defined ‘vulgar’ guitar solo that makes you reminisce of better times. Frontman Harry Watton has described the track as: “The sound [is] big, the verses have a good walking vibe to them, with this hint of cockiness that plays to the ‘nutter’ vibe“.
The 90’s influence on The Rotanas’ new offering is beautifully obvious – imagine Oasis with a more intense, driving drum beat and raspier vocals. Having previously shared the stage with classic acts like Black Grape and Kyle Falconer from The View, the Britpop influence is evident, yet the band are able to add their own twist. Both ‘Manic’ and ‘Spinner’, released in 2021, boast infectious lyrical hooks that – pardon the pun – manically spin around your head, providing tracks that reflect iconic anthems with a slight edge.
Signed to Disobedient Records, The Rotanas will surely be gracing the UK’s live stages when lockdown restrictions are lifted. The Gritpop group have received critical acclaim, gaining airplay on BBC Radio Wales and BBC In the West. If another Battle of Britpop were to occur, The Rotanas would surely be in the running for the number one spot.
