Rising singer-songwriter Sophia Amato has released a new video, for her ‘Never Tear Us Apart’ INXS cover.
This performance video was filmed in her apartment in East London, following the release of her latest single ‘Why You Trying Not To Love Me.’ She has a penchant for the visual medium, with tracks like ‘Glorious Mess’ also featuring a visual accompaniment.
Originating from Sicily, Amato has spent the past few years between London and New York. She has a love for art and jazz, and she is currently working with producers like Bastian (Jess Glynne, Jessie Ware) and John Foyle (FKA Twigs).
“While there are no gigs, it was good to record a live performance of the single instead – Me and some friends jamming, in my apartment in East London. We’re just trying to get through this weird time, and do something towards re-creating the amazing energy that you get from seeing live music. Hopefully, we’ll have more of the real stuff coming soon.”
The acoustic cover features Amato’s vocals accompanied by Nadine Samuels and Louise LaBelle. The video delivers soulful and complex vocals, over keys provided by Quantz. The black and white video is shot in a grainy quality, providing a sense of nostalgia and lust for the past. Amato’s vocals are strong and steady, contrasting to the handheld nature of the visual content.
The performance clearly takes place in someone’s apartment, but the sombre nature delivers a powerful production that could be taken straight to a streaming platform without any post-production. The harmonies and vocal experimentation between the backing vocalists and Amato provides for a gorgeous listening experience. The video’s homely setting feels as though the vocalists are setting in your front lounge, reminiscent of a Sofar Sounds show or something of the like.
Sophia Amato’s vocals are a force to be reckoned with, someone who clearly will be selling out acoustic shows when lockdown is eventually over. We are all gripped to hear what she is going to release next, but whatever it is, it will surely be brilliant.
