Sunderland band noyou are back with an ’80s inspired synth-pop track, titled ‘Underneath the Pain.’ This is noyou’s first single of 2021, starting the year with an upbeat and bright single that is impossible to not dance around the room to.
Starting off as a solo act, noyou expanded into a six-piece band, comprising of Connor Jobes (vocals/guitar), Joey Campbell (keyboard/vocals), Ryan Banks (bass), Sam Thoburn (guitar), Chris Keepin (guitar) and Brad Davison (drums). The group has experimented with multiple genres, blending indie rock with synth-pop in their latest offerings of ‘Since That Day,‘ ‘We’re So Sorry’ and ‘Underneath The Pain.’
‘Underneath The Pain’ opens with vibrant and joyous synths that instantly cast the mind to any film starring Molly Ringwald. Jobes enters with almost monotone vocals that build and build, producing an explosive chorus. The track was written by keyboard player Joey Campbell, who stated that:
“The track explores feelings of insecurity in relationships, as well as holding yourself to a standard no one can possibly achieve and beating yourself up when you fail.”
This feeling is certainly prevalent within this track, featuring a catchy chorus sound that One Direction would have been jealous of.
“I believe you when you scream my name / My name / But I can’t hear you underneath the pain / The pain”
The sombre lyrics mixed with a fast-paced, synth-pop beat illustrates the band’s ability to convey relatable feelings into an infectious dance track.
