King-No One are back, this time with a funky new single, titled ‘Bad Porno.’
King No-One are a glamorous three-piece band from York, known for insatiable synth melodies and psychedelic lyrics. The band have been seen to tour solo too, with vocalist Zach Lount performing a socially distanced solo show at Colours in Hoxton last December. The band’s previous performances have included sets at Reading and Leeds and TRNSMT festival, with their UK tour commencing in Autumn.
The track begins with an acoustic guitar melody, simplistic yet poignant to ease us in. We are immediately introduced to Lount’s easily recognisable vocals, often high and optimistic. The bass guitar hidden in the depths of the mix makes the track feel almost robotic at times, in a good way of course. You can definitely feel that a music video will be released for this track soon, with the lyrics following a clear narrative arc that would benefit from a visual accompaniment.
“Lying on a bed of red velvet / With my shirt at the door and I know / I’m about to star in a bad porno”
The main chorus of the track jumps into the heavier side of indie-rock, contrasting heavily with the initial acoustic tones we heard at the top of the song. Known for their synth-heavy sounds, this track is no exception. The overall sound is truly striking, contrasting with strange and intriguing lyrics. With many songwriters taking inspiration from their own lives and experiences, I feel like the story behind this song is certainly an interesting one.
“Don’t call me daddy / I ain’t into that”
King No-One have established themselves in the heart of the alternative scene, both through their full band performances, and Lount’s solo appearances. It is incredibly hard not to save this track to your playlists after the first listen, and if you disagree, I think you’re probably just lying to yourself.
