Kawala have just released their new single ‘Chasing / Wasting Time’. It’s a light and bubbly folk-pop track that leaves you feeling buoyed up for spring, with a little food for thought too.
It’s not a song that faffs around getting started. Kawala goes straight in with their signature airy vocals, acoustic guitar and a thrumming, jumping bass line that remains in the track throughout. They have a really distinctive, summery vibe, and this track lives up to that reputation. The rhythm of it is very similar to their 2018 offering ‘Do It Like You Do’, but that’s okay, as it means the song is instantly recognisable. Also, it means you can still have a dance.
The refrain “Are you chasing and wasting time / Feel the fear but more the pride / You keep on chasing a space in time” might stop you in your dancing tracks, invoking uncertainty about time poorly spent and making questionable choices. For those who feel undecided, or like they’re striving for an unreachable undefined something, this is exactly the track you need to dance your feelings away to.
There’s also the lovely, evocative lyric: “I know it’s risky but the sound of the gun will push you hard and fill your lungs”. Again, it works to weave a touch of anticipatory nostalgia into the light-hearted, light-footed music. It’s certainly addictive, but beware: musically it’s a little bit one-level, and after too many repeated listens, the charm begins to wear off. Not that this will be a problem on tour though. COVID permitting, Kawala will be starting their tour in Bottesford in August this year, where meaningful and easily learned lyrics can only be an asset.
