Last week, beabadoobee gave an insight into her upcoming project, with the release of her newest single ‘Last Day on Earth‘. The track is taken from her new EP, titled ‘Our Extended Play’.
‘Last Day on Earth’ is heavily inspired by early lockdown, and the realisation that if people knew in advance how 2020 would go, they would have done things differently on their last day of freedom. Reflecting on the days before lockdown is something I’m sure we have all been doing lately, with the year anniversary of lockdowns taking place this month. This song is sure to be part of an abundance of lockdown themed tunes, celebrating our so-called freedom. ‘Last Day on earth’ is resplendent, featuring 90s nostalgia with strong synths and a chorus of “Shoop-doop, shoop-doo, badoobadoo”. It evokes a sense of innocence and youthfulness that can only be matched by Hanson’s 1997 track ‘Mmmbop‘.
At times, this track feels as if it was taken from an early 90s coming of age soundtrack. This sunny alt-pop single has a sunny and joyful sound, an optimism that is particularly timely as lockdown restrictions begin to lift, and the weather continues to improve.
“The world’s about to end so I’m gonna have to finish / I guess if it were nicer, we’d be better off innit? / I haven’t got a plan, so I’m think I’m gonna wing it”
The 20-year-old British singer-songwriter’s career exploded in early 2020 when her 2017 debut single ‘Coffee‘ was sampled on Powfu’s 2019 track ‘Death Bed (Coffee for Your Head)‘. This sample resulted in the track reaching viral fame, with over 5.4 million TikTok videos featuring the track. beabadoobee was nominated for the Rising Star Award at the 2020 Brit Awards, and was predicted as a breakthrough act for 2020 in BBC’s Sounds of 2020. ‘Our Extended Play’ follows four previous EP releases and a debut album, and her upcoming album is sure to be a stepping stone to success.
