Tom Auton is a singer, songwriter and producer in his own right, showcasing all of his talents in his latest single ‘Victim of the Groove.’
Auton has been doing most of his song completely by himself since 2016, however, he does often co-write with other successful songwriters, such as John Adams and Jake O’Neil. He has already been added to major playlists on Spotify and received praises from BBC Introducing’s Adam Walton.
Victim of the Groove is a rock and disco-influenced song that talks about the frustration of writers’ block.
“As a chef, you’d feel incredibly useless if you couldn’t cook anything. The same applies to songwriters when they can’t write songs. When I can’t write a new song, I explore this hatred, by writing a new song.”
This is a pretty impressive thing to be able to achieve. The frustrations in his lyrics are also mirrored in the aggressiveness of the guitar riff. You can feel his anger, not only by listening to the words, but by simply hearing the melodies in the production.
Right from the start, the energy is already here, and you are immediately taken into the space of the music. The in-your-face guitar and drums bring the element of life into the sound, something that is perhaps lacking in a lot of productions nowadays. Just by hearing the studio version of this song, I can already tell that it will become a crowd favourite based on the easy way you can fall into the groove of the song. Clearly, this track is going to be exciting at live shows.
The question that remains is whether the title is just a description of what the writer anticipated the audience would feel like when listening to the song live? Clearly, this is a pretty good representation of how you would feel, whilst listening to the track in a live show. The lead guitar is completely addicting, with distortion and fuzz. It sounds so clean, a riff that will have you singing along to it by the second chorus.
The track name, ’Victim of the Groove,’ is clearly very appropriate. I can safely safe that I too have fallen a victim to the groove of this high energy song.
