Kaytranada is no stranger to creating effortlessly gratifying bangers, and his new track ‘Caution’ lives up to our expectations.
Clocking in at only two and a half minutes long, the song wastes no time catapulting us straight into the beat from the onset. The melodic blend of hippy, groovy funk, and a rhythmic, mellow bassline formulates an impeccable disco anthem, leaving us to forgive Kaytranada for conceiving an abbreviated tune. Of course, we are still yearning for more. Eerily reminiscent of Bellaire’s ‘Paris City Jazz’, the minimalistic vocals in ‘Caution’ allow us to immerse in the tranquil flow of a hazy yet vivacious rhythm, wishing we were partying at New York’s Studio 54 during its prime.
The song debuted in partnership with TikTok’s Black History Month initiative, where the social media platform is currently “celebrating Blackness past, present, and future” throughout February. By acknowledging how disco evolved from African-American culture, ‘Caution’ escorts us back to its conception in 1970s America. Additionally, it is also paying a foolproof homage to Kaytranada’s hometown of Montreal, dubbed ‘disco’s second city.’ Disco was often regarded as a form of escapism for Black, Latin and LGBTQ+ individuals from the discrimination and bigotry they faced in society.
Although seeming somewhat repetitive, ’Caution’ unequivocally remains an exquisite dance-inducing tune. This could be perhaps due to the track being produced with TikTok’s fast-paced nature in mind, but we are musing for the day it can be sported at nightclubs. It only takes indulging in his 2019 album Bubba and his illustrious 2013 Boiler Room set to recognise the only way is up for Kaytranada.
