Bristol-based trio Grandmas House released their third single ‘Always Happy‘ last week, and it is one hell of a piece, from start to finish.
The band formed in late 2018 and have already taken their place in Bristol’s music scene with their guitar riffs, aggressive drums and ear-catching vocals and lyrics. They have already been played on major radio stations around the nation, and it is only a matter of time until they hit it big in the UK. They are set to release an album later on, but a precise date or name of the album is yet to be released. However, based on their Bandcamp I can already snoop out that their next single might be one called ‘Small Talk.’
The production and instrumental delivery of the song compliments the vocal delivery well, and reminds me of bands like Lady Bird. The guitar riffs and aggressive drums drive the lyrical meaning forwards even more, something that isn’t represented enough in music.
Their spoken verse lyrics bring everyone in and forces you to truly listen to the lyrics. The contrast between the lyrics and delivery force you to take a second to listen to what lies beneath the music, at the true meaning of the track. My personal favourite lyrics are the lines ‘I’m charming and I’m confident when I wear my suit jacket‘ followed by ‘and I say what I want and I say what I like.’ For me, this feels like a response to the patriarchal standards that women should always smile and be happy, that they should speak their mind, and should just stay quiet and polite.
These societal expectations are clearly disregarded in ‘Always Happy’, as it is loud, bold, and in your face. It’s the response we all should have when a man tries to tell us what to do and who to be.
I believe that there is a space for more female punk bands in the music industry today, a gap that is slowly but surely being filled. I am very excited to see what they have planned further ahead, and I will be excitedly waiting for their next release. Until then, catch me streaming ’Always Happy’ on repeat.
