Fake Laugh and Tarquin are back with a brand new single, titled ‘So Good.’ Following their debut collaboration, ‘Meaningless Things’, the duo has delivered another delicious track, blending punchy production and airy vocals, to keep you wanting more.
With stuttering rhythms that are reminiscent of Timbaland, and warm vocals that liken Radiohead, this new single is a perfect blend of heavy production and vocal performance that you can get lost in. With roots in 80s indie-pop, Fake Laugh – aka songwriter Kamran Khan – has expanded in his sound once again. In his melodic album ‘Waltz’ last year, Khan showcased a different quality to his songwriting. Moody, stripped-back pianos emerged and replaced the sounds of wonky guitars and nostalgic lo-fi drums.
On the flip side, ‘So Good’ speaks more to the rave-like, R&B flavours that lace Tarquin’s body of work. Having gained attention throughout the London underground club scene, Tarquin is no stranger to making ambitious music. With the slight grime and psychedelic energy that Tarquin brings through tracks like ‘Missy Mischief’, the duo’s latest project is surely a head-bopper.
Beneath the surface, the track offers a sense of light in the dark that we’ve all been experiencing. Tarquin elaborates:
“We’ve all been struggling of late, but to me, the song’s concept is a reminder that despite periods of unrest we can and will return to positivity. [We are] surfacing from the depths, into the warmth of relief.”
The marrying of both the artists’ styles and lyrical skills make this track a timely gem. While Fake Laugh’s weightless vocals will lift you into the melody, Tarquin’s jungle-like rhythm and bass will surely ground you, making this such an immersive single. The song is nothing short of its title. So good.
