Cassia release session video for ‘Powerlines’

Following the release of their February EP, Cassia has returned to deliver a session version of the title track, ‘Powerlines.’

With the addition of keys provided by Yannick, the band has delivered another one of their lovely alternative versions of their tracks. From their back catalogue, different versions can be heard of tracks like ‘100 Times Over’ from their single and album releases, and the acoustic cover of ‘Don’t Make a Scene.’ Listening to Cassia on shuffle, you’ll probably end up listening to tracks of the same name a few times in a row, but the different versions allow for easy listening, and I often forget that I’ve just listened to the same track, but in the acoustic form.

It’s been so long since I’ve actually seen live music, I mistook drummer Jacob Leff’s shaker as a roll of black bin bags at first. The video takes place in a drained swimming pool, where the band essentially just play their newest track for three and a half minutes.

“Will it lead me closer / Pull me up from nowhere / Will it lead me closer than this?”

Featuring a pink flamingo umbrella that disappears very quickly into the video, the shots showcase their new track in all its glory. Vocalist Rob Ellis has decided to whack his shoes off, and we’ve got to give a shoutout to bassist Lou Cotterill and his funky dancing.

Ellis’ more serious persona likely comes from a sense of concentration, seemingly very focused on getting the job done. The same can be said in previous videos, like the Don’t Make a Scene acoustic video, where his gorgeous Gibson acoustic guitar is also featured.

The original music video for ‘Powerlines’ features the band playing cassettes whilst on a drive, with their CASSIA personalised number plate. Combining the ambient sounds of the lads in the car, the video brings back memories of actually being able to leave the house and drive along the coast with your mates. You’re able to feel a lot more of the band’s personality in the official music video, with the session version being published with the sole purpose of showing the new track recording.

The panning shots around the pool make for warm and welcoming footage, something pretty engaging for just a video of a band playing their new song. Watching the video has made me miss being able to stand outside in the heat, and just dance to your favourite bands. Maybe I’ll just have to drain a pool and see if that makes any difference to our lockdown mood.
