Gin Wigmore Releases Explosive Girl Power Anthem ‘HBIC’

Gin Wigmore has burst back into the world of music with the release of her first song since 2018, the feisty girl-power anthem ‘Head Bitch In Charge’ or HBIC as it’s titled on the likes of Spotify and Apple Music. The song was released on record label 333 Wreckords Crew, a label founded by her husband Jason Aalon Butler.

The track was released to coincide with New Zealand’s general election with the focus being to recognise and celebrate the people in power:

“I hope to offer a soundtrack to the celebration of the HBIC that exists in all of us and commend those currently utilizing their platform for good. And with that, I’d personally like to dedicate this song to New Zealand’s own HBIC – Jacinda Ardern – for doing just that.”

HBIC is one hundred percent a self-love song of sorts in the form of a badass rock number, made with a lot of passion and designed to empower anyone. Her music, this track especially, reminds me of London-based indie rock trio Dream Wife whose music carries the same message as this explosive piece. HBIC shares the message that women and non-binary people should not feel limited by the patriarchy and the ‘rules’ it has set out for us.

Layered with keys and building guitar, Wigmore’s raspy, high pitched vocals are reminiscent of Bikini Kill’s Julie Ruin, and together, both vocals and instruments create a lasting feeling of determination. The track lives up to the label of a song designed to empower. It’s almost possible to see the mosh pits of young, empowered people forming in their hundreds at a live show.

Having released her debut album ‘Holy Smoke’ in 2009, Wigmore has come on in leaps and bounds since. Her sound has changed from pop to rock and with this change, appears to be an increased level of confidence too. She seems more and more comfortable with her musical style every time a new release rolls around, not letting anyone stop her creative journey. This is something often expected with the change of a record label.

Gin Wigmore is capable of anything, and HBIC is a true demonstration of this.
